From January 1, 2026, the requirements for obtaining French nationality through naturalization or reintegration by decree are evolving. Two major changes should be anticipated.
1️⃣ A Higher French Language Requirement (B2)
Applicants will now need to demonstrate a B2 level in both spoken and written French (previously B1).
Proof can be provided through:
- a French diploma, or
- a certificate from an officially recognized language test
Adjustments or exemptions may be granted in cases of disability or health issues, upon presentation of a medical certificate.
2️⃣ A New Mandatory Civic Exam
For naturalization and reintegration applications, a civic exam will be introduced.
Exam format:
- 40 multiple-choice questions
- Maximum duration: 45 minutes
- Minimum score: 32 correct answers (80%)
- Digital exam, conducted in French
Topics covered:
- the values of the French Republic
- institutions
- rights and duties
- French history, culture, and society
Passing this exam will be mandatory before submitting an application.
Application Process
Applications are generally submitted online via the ANEF platform, along with the required documents:
- identity document
- €55 fiscal stamp
- valid residence permit (except for EU citizens)
In some regions or abroad, paper applications may still be required.
💡 In Summary
These new rules aim to better support integration.
The key is to anticipate these changes, prepare gradually for the language and cultural aspects, and remain confident throughout the process.
