Starting 1 January 2026, the conditions for obtaining French nationality through naturalization will change. Two major updates should be anticipated.
1️⃣ Higher French-language requirement: Level B2
Applicants will now be required to demonstrate B2 level proficiency (oral and writing). It used to be B1 level.
Proof may be provided through:
- a French diploma or
- a certificate of success from a recognized language test.
Accommodations or exemptions are possible in cases of disability or health issues with a medical certificate.
2️⃣ A new mandatory civic exam
For naturalization applications, a civic exam will be introduced.
Exam format:
- 40-question multiple-choice test
- maximum duration: 45 minutes
- at least 32 correct answers required (80%)
- digital test in French
Topics covered:
- the values of the Republic
- institutions
- rights and duties
- French history, culture, and society
Passing this exam will be mandatory before submitting the application.
Submission of the application
The application is generally submitted online on the ANEF platform, with the required documents:
- identity document
- €55 fiscal stamp
- valid residence permit (except for EU citizens)
In some regions or abroad, submission remains paper-based.
